Matt Keating filed his candidacy Monday to serve on the Zone 4 seat of the Board of Education at Lane Community College, hoping to be elected to replace departing representative Susie Johnston.
Keating, who has been a member of LCC’s budget committee since 2011, said he is dedicated to keeping tuition affordable and maintaining programs and faculty.
“Cutting programs at Lane is an unacceptable practice,” Keating said Monday. “The answer to our budget woes, quite clearly, is in Salem. Well into the 21st century, Lane Community College, sadly, is funded at a 20th century level.”
Keating served as the president of Lane’s Student Productions Association, helping the theater arts program when it was threatened by budget cuts, he said.
A countywide special election on May 21 will decide who fills the Zone 4 representative position. Johnston moved out of the district and won’t seek re-election.
